Visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine has always been a dream of mine. It's often said that a visit to this sacred place requires a divine calling, and given its status as one of the most visited temples in India, it certainly felt like a significant spiritual journey. However, the logistics of planning the trip can be quite tricky due to the necessary reservations, which require an Aadhaar card for identification.
Preparing for the Pilgrimage
The main temple, known as Bhavan, is the focal point of the pilgrimage. The journey typically begins at BanGanga, where you must present your ID card, which should be picked up a day before you start your trek. There are numerous detailed YouTube videos offering directions, but here are some essential tips for beginners like me:
Timing: Depending on your walking pace, you can complete the Darshan in a single day if you start early. Alternatively, you can choose to stay overnight near Bhavan. However, accommodations are limited and need to be booked well in advance—usually, bookings open about 60 days ahead and fill up quickly. I was fortunate enough to plan ahead and secure a booking, and I highly recommend doing the same. The area around Bhavan is beautiful and serene.
Walking Path: The entire path is paved and shaded, making the trek more manageable. There are rest areas along the way, and blankets are available for a nominal fee during colder nights. The path is designed to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for all devotees.
Best Time to Visit: The busiest times are during festivals and weekends, so I suggest planning your visit during off-season months and weekdays. Winter months, excluding the festive season, are ideal. Be cautious during the monsoon season as rain can cause landslides and disrupt travel.
Modes of Transportation
By Train: There are direct trains from Delhi to Katra, the town where the journey towards Bhavan begins. If you're traveling from further away, Katra is well-connected by rail.
By Air: The nearest airport is in Jammu. From there, you can either stay in Jammu or take a taxi to Katra, which is about a two-hour drive. Taxis are readily available at the airport, and you can negotiate the fare.
Walking: The trek to Bhavan takes around 3 to 4 hours each way, depending on your pace.
Helicopter: A helicopter ride can take you to Sanji Chhat, from where it’s a short walk to Bhavan. Reservations are required, especially during busy seasons. Keep in mind that helicopter rides can be canceled due to weather conditions, so have a backup plan.
Battery Cars and Horses: Battery cars are available from Ardhkuwari and are a convenient option. Horses can also take you all the way to Bhavan. Prior reservations are suggested for both modes of transport.

For a quicker Darshan, consider opting for special Poojan services. It's best to refer to the official shrine website for accurate and updated information. Their WhatsApp chat support was incredibly helpful, answering all my questions and assisting with reservations.
